In the magazine of SRP projektas “What to be 2026”: What do road engineers do in their work?
Real stories inspire more than descriptions of professions. Meet Deimantė Lunkevičiūtė – her career path this year ended up in the magazine “What to be 2026”
The head of the project part Deimantė Lunkevičiūtė was attracted to road engineering by numbers and drawing. “I was attracted by the precision, I was interested in how the lines should look, how to draw 3D details, where the cuts should be,” she says.
Deimantė says that she dreamed of becoming an engineer from a young age. It was not even frightening that few girls choose the profession. “I didn’t have to face discouragement or discrimination. But if it were, I wouldn’t have been deterred by it,” says the engineer.
The girl graduated VILNIUS TECH – Vilnius Gediminas Technical University studies in road, railway and urban engineering (bachelor’s and master’s degree with honors). While still studying, she started working in her specialty, and “SRP projektas” is her third job. Deimantė says that when she started her path as an engineer, she was pleasantly surprised by the possibilities in the field.
“This is a very broad area where you can realize yourself. If you have enrolled in road and railway engineering, it certainly does not mean that you will stand on the road with a shovel in your hands, although even trying it out is very useful to understand how the work is done. We can work in both design and contracting, coordinate projects, perform audits and expertise. There is a lot of space for self-realization,” says the engineer.
Currently, Deimantė contributes to the projects of the Birštonas bridge over the Nemunas and the Jurbarkas bridge and embankments. The work requires a lot of precision and diligence, but it also gives you creative freedom.
“The work is precise, because you have to follow all kinds of regulations and laws. But at the same time, there is a lot of creativity, because you can prepare solutions yourself. There is both administrative work and design, sometimes you have to go to the site of the object. You can taste both this and that,” says Deimantė.
